Mushroom picking
Mushroom picking
For general information on mushrooms and mushroom picking:
Mushrooms are fungi that are widespread in forests, meadows and other natural environments. Their collection, known as mushroom hunting, is a popular activity in Slovenia, especially during the autumn season. Mushroom hunters not only search for delicious edible species but also appreciate spending time in nature. However, foraging mushrooms requires knowledge, as some edible species are very similar to poisonous mushrooms.
In Slovenia, mushroom picking is regulated by law, which includes limits on the amount of mushrooms picked per day. The amount allowed is 2 kg/person. Protected mushroom species in Slovenia:
In Slovenia, some mushroom species are protected by law, which means that they cannot be collected or destroyed. These mushrooms are protected because of their rarity or ecological importance. Protected species include:
- Great crested newt (Agaricus macrosporus)
- Little dust moth(Bovista plumbea)
- Egg leprechaun(Boletus regius)
- Black truffle(Tuber melanosporum)
Protected mushroom species play a vital role in maintaining ecosystems, so it is important to recognize and avoid picking them.
Poisonous mushrooms similar to edible mushrooms:
Some poisonous mushrooms look very similar to edible species, so mushroom pickers should be especially careful. Some examples of such mushrooms are:
